MILLS WINS FOUR MEDAL, 11
VARSITY RECORDS BROKEN
First year Law student John Mills had the meet of
the year at the recently completed OUA swimming championships. Starting off on Friday with a bronze medal
in the 50m backstroke, he followed it up on Saturday with two silvers in the
50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.
Joining Mills on Sunday were Keegan Harris, Trevor McLoughlin and
Brandon Crawford who combined forces to capture bronze in the 4X50m medley
relay. The same foursome was also
responsible for re-writing the varsity record book for the 4X100m medley relay
as well (where Mills set his 6th individual varsity record in the
lead off backstroke leg). Bob Farinas
was also able to contribute individual points while Brandon Vandyk, John
Scroggie, Marc-Anthony Padula, Mark Blenkinsop, Tanner Rasmussen, Sofian Ayyad
and assistant team captain Brock Cayden all combined to score points on various
relays.
The women as well
had their fair share of record setting performances. Paola Osario, a first year Engineering student, set two varsity
records in her own right (200m and 400m freestyle) while teaming with her
sister Luz Osario, women’s captain Krista Boegel and Melissa Juergensen to
break the 4X200m freestyle record for the Raven women. Boegel, the women’s points leader, finalled
in all the breastoke events despite not swimming her best times. When asked,
Krista had this to say about the meet: “I think that
Carleton as a team swam really well...lots of personal bests...probably the
best we have done in quite sometime”.
Boegel, Mills, Osorio and Keegan Harris are now concentrating on the CIS national varsity championships set for March 5-7 in Toronto. A fond farewell is wished to graduating men’s team assistant captain (and past captain), tough guy Brock Clayden: good luck Brock and just think, no more 200m butterflys!
